Denmark might not be known for its majestic mountains and tons of snow, but we still have some pretty awesome riders that challenge the position of being the Danish Freeride Champion. This year, the competition took place in beautiful Fieberbrunn, in Austria.
The conditions were perfect after two days of snowing and the line up was lit. And we were especially excited about the awesome line-up of girls. Before the competition, we were lucky to catch Troels Iversen, the organizer of the competition, for a quick talk about the expectations for the female line up this year:
What do you expect for the girl in this year’s competition?
I expect a great show and a high level of skiing. We already know that the two best Danish female freeskiers, Malene Østerbye Madsen and Josefine Lützau, will be competing in Fieberbrunn. Malene started her season with a third and first place in the Freeride World Qualifier series, so she got great confidence at the moment. Right now, Josefine is competing in a Freeride World Qualifier in America. Hopefully, she will do great and be super excited about the Danish Nationals too. Furthermore, the very young but super talented Maria Andreassen will be here, which I am looking very much forward too. And a bunch of seasonaires from around the Alpes, including great skiers from St Anton, am Arlberg.
The last couple of years the number of competing girls has been decreasing, why do you think that is?
The new organization, new destination and different weeks. This combination has been part of the falling number of girls competing in the Danish Nationals. It not only the number of girls but participants in general. Our aim for the future is to have the Danish Nationals in the same week every year. Hopefully, that will bring back the hype and excitement for all Danish freeskiers to be a part of this wonderful event.
Was the companionship among the girls different?
Not really. In my opinion, we have witnessed a generational change. We as organizers will do our best to attract and promote the Danish Nationals for all Danish freeride girls in the future.
Which new up-coming freeride girls should we look out for?
Malene Andreassen is very young but super talented, 12-year-old who will be one of the Danish competitive freeskiers you should look out for in the future. And then we got all the very talented ski instructor girls working all over the Alps. Even though we are born in a flat country, we have some great freeride skiers in Denmark.
As Troels predicted, Malene Østerbye Madsen and Josefine Lützau proved their talent and took first and second place. ✌🏽
